This writer is a straight, baptist male. He forgot the date and year of his baptism (it was posted on the bible he was given, but he conveniently lost it) but he remembers how he felt. A baptism is considered to be a rebirth of sorts and that's what it felt like. It was like a breath of fresh air. This writer was a new person.
That didn't matter to the church, though. A lot of the crap that happened in school still happened in the church. This writer was still by his peers and looked down upon by the adults, all for no reason. Needless to say, that sucked. If this writer wanted to constantly deal with bullies and be ignored by adults, he would have kept flunking third grade. Truly garbage.
This writer toughed it out until he became an adult and the experience wasn't any more satisfying. As one youtuber put it, it was like an extensions of high school. Everyone branched of into cliques and if you couldn't find a place to fit in, well it sucked to be you. It wasn't just limited to this writer, either. This writer can't tell you how many times he heard this "saved" people make fun of someones clothes or who needed a beating. This writer is isn't just talking about the general congregation. Deacons, choirs member, and even a few of the ministers started swearing like they were making a rap album as soon as the got of the doors. What a bunch of hypocrites.
This writer also noticed a lot of straight up BS in the sermons themselves. For one, the sermons are all recycled from the previous year. The writer is means the preacher will preach something, then the next year, he'll be saying the same thing on the same day. It's almost like the preacher is given a set of talking points to parrot instead of reading the bible for himself and writing the sermon in his own words.
Then, there those who don't practice what they preach. They tell you not to fornicate, then turn around and screw the choir director (whom they're not married to, by the way). They say you shouldn't do drugs, but then you'll catch them sniffing fumes in an alley. They'll trash talk behind people's backs, then pretend they're friends when they get face-to-face. The biggest kicker is when they spend years telling you homosexuality is bad and demonic, then years later tell you that you need to accept homosexuality (you know, that thing they spent years preaching against) or you'll burn in Hell. In consistancies like these and more made this writer realize the church and it's people are full of crap.
Don't mistake leaving the church as turning your back on God. This writer is simply saying that you don't have to go the the church to worship the Lord. In fact, you can often have a more fulfilling relationship with the Lord if you stay at home and pray before you watch football on Sunday (Go, Detroit Lions). You can still love the Lord as as much and you won't have to kiss another set of butts (hypocrite butts, to boot) to prove it.
Until next time...
Brother, I hear ya. I hope and I don't think you are saying all believers are like this. The institutional church is not where it is at at all. But there will always be true followers. And they are even in the institutions. Btw, I have been visiting a new church in my neighborhood for about 6 months, want to visit?
