Well, D-day is almost here. It's (supposedly) the most important election in American history, with the two worst candidates in American history at its center. In the left corner, wearing the blue trunks, we have Hillary "The Criminal" Clinton. In the right corner, wearing the red trunks, we have "Big Bigot" Donald Trump. Yep, this is what it comes down to.
How did we get here? Both sides passed on a number of better candidates. Bernie Sanders would have been a much better candidate for the Democrats. Heck, the Dems didn't even listen to Martin O'Malley (because the mederators for the Democratic debates conveniently ignored him). He may have been better than Mrs. Clinton, but thanks to the media (they never stop), we'll never know.
The Republicans, on the other hand, literally sent the worse candidate they could find. John Kasich, Ben Carson, and Chris Christie were all better candidates. Heck, Deez Nuts would have probably been better (and funnier). Any of those choice (including Mr. Nuts, sadly) probably would have blow Ms. Clinton out of the water. It's almost like the Republicans said, "Who can we send out to lose us the next four years?" They answered by trotting out Mr. Trump. If Ms. Clinton wasn't the representative for the Dems, Mr. Trump would get crushed.
Simply put, both Democrats and Republicans put their worst foot forward and it will be the America citizens (not the political parties themselves) who will pay the price. The third and fourth party suck too, otherwise they'd be right in the thick of things in a year where they could have realistically won. Gary Johnson seemed to be picking up steam for a stretch, but he fell by the quickly wayside. Jill Stein...um...who? Mr. Johnson and Mrs. let themselves down badly, because they didn't push hard enough. Mr. Johnson is especially disappointing because he was almost there. He almost got enough attention to be taken seriously and didn't do diddly.
However, it's pointless to worry about how we got here now, because we are here and that's not changing (sadly). Worrying about the past is an issue for future elections. Right now, it's all about dealing with these present candidates. So, what will America do?
People can write in a candidate. Heck, you can even write in yourself. Imagine if every voter wrote themselves in. That would cause one heck of a headache for the government and make the statement, "Quit giving us crappy candidates. When you send us good candidates, we'll give you the power back." This writer isn't sure if the American people as a whole can legally be president, but that would be awesome if it were possible. This writer thinks that 4 to 8 years with no president would be a great learning experience for all involved (both citizens and government).
In the end, as long as you vote, you've done your job as an American citizen. Vote for Hillary, vote for Trump, vote for yourself, but get out there and vote. Reach deep into the recesses of your soul and pick the candidate you want (not the candidate everyone else wants or the candidate you're pressured into picking). Also, whatever you do, don't forget about local elections, because that's where the real power is. Vote or not, it's up to each of us as Americans to decide. Good luck, America.
Until next time...
It's interesting we have been talking about the church lately. What you say above about not have a President for a period of time. Not sure the would work BUT my old church was without a pastor for about 18 months and guess what? People really stepped up and used their gifts. Funny, eh? Ok, kind of sad that the church is an institution instead of a body.
